Eloped at a very young age.
Had a child when it wasn’t time.
Still living with the in-laws.
Those are my parents. Doesn’t sound like an ideal relationship eh’?
But let me tell you why they are the ideal marriage for me.
They started as a very young couple. (High school grads to be exact.) They probably have more problems than they ever could handle. And yet after 33 years of being together, you can still see the same love that they have for each other 33 years ago (well, let’s say 32 cause I wasn’t there to see the first year. :P).
I can still remember when I was fifteen, my father was chasing my giggling mother just like you see on those mushy movies. At that point in time, I told myself that I am gonna get married and will have that kind of lovin’! (I’ve been practicing my giggling run for awhile now, but hubby is just giving me this weird look everytime I do that. I wonder why?)
There was a time that I needed somebody to help me out in taking care of my first born. Since my mom is taking care of my youngest sister, it was my father who came to us in Singapore. It was only for a short time, but it was cut shorter because I couldn’t stand the sight of my father sulking in loneliness. It was as if he was given a death sentence.
When we moved here in Australia, I again needed his help. I was wondering, how come he wasn’t so sad this time. Then I found out that every monday, he goes to this cafe (And it was weird to me, cause he never drinks coffee.) that has a newsletter, some sort of a coffee news, and he was collecting it. So to kill my curiosity, I asked. And his answer made me “kilig” to the very core of my bones. He said, “so that I can collect this and send to your mama. This is funny stuff. She will like it.” And to make things sweeter, he showed me this card that reads….”have fun reading this, with your every sip think of me.” Awwwwww! (He even included a sache of coffee to make it complete! ahahaha!:
That’s the kind of lovin’ I want to have when all the kids have grown and all the troubles have flown away. When me and hubs go to a difficult phase in life, I always think of my parents. I always think that if they can do it with so little, we can also do it. And I always hold on to that thought.
I think this photo speaks for my story. This photo was taken at the reception of my wedding. I was the one who got married that day, yet they are the ones looking like newlyweds. How can you not be inspired by that. =)
So, tell us whose marriage inspires you? What makes their marriage ideal, and how do you apply that to your own marriage?
